Elles ont emporté l'award du meilleur groupe. Billy Gilman a emmené leur trophée, tandis qu'il se voyait décerner celui de Discovery Award. A propos de Billy, je l'ai rencontré et c'est un petit bonhomme sympa. Il a tout naturellement signé le magazine et fait une photo. Jessica Andrews, Montgomery Gentry, Shedaisy et Phil Vassar étaient aussi en compétition pour le Discovery award. L'un des temps forts est à porter au crédit de Kathy Mattea dont les efforts caritatifs lui ont permis de récolter le Minnie Pearl Humanitarium award. Kathy a dédié le prix à ses amis et à son père qui se bat actuellement contre le cancer. Celles et ceux d'entre nous qui étaient à Gstaadt en Suisse lors de son concert se souviennent de ses paroles concernant son père. Elle avait reçu un coup de téléphone très tard lui annonçant de mauvaises conditions de santé de son père, et un peu après, un autre appel la rassurant quelque peu. Ici, Kathy Mattea remerciait tout le monde avec beaucoup d'émotion dans la voix. J'ai côtoyé Kathy à plusieurs reprises et la moindre de ses qualité est la sincérité dans ses actes. C'est pour vous dire le degré de respect et de classe qui émane de l'artiste. La soirée avait commencé avec "Where I come from" d'Alan Jackson avec harmonicas et pedal steel. Lee Ann Womack a chanté "Stronger than I am" au lieu du trop connu "I hope you dance", et Shedaisy s'est laissé allé à un titre a cappella. John Michael Montgomery et Jewel ont joué "The little girl", et souvenez-vous que la chanteuse a un physique de rève et qu'elle est la femme de Barry Coburn, ex-patron d'Atlantic Nashville. L'une des prestations les plus chaudes fut celle de "Burn" par Jo Dee Messina. A chaque refrain, deux colonnes de feu jaillissaient de la scène, et Jo Dee finissait immolée comme Jeanne d'Arc.
